The distance between Stari Grad and Hvar town is 20 km which takes about 30 minutes by bus or 20 min by car. The ferry terminal in Stari Grad is closer to Hvar town, so it takes just 20 minutes by bus. There is no ferry between Stari grad and Hvar town. The cheapest and most convenient way to get between these two places is to use the bus.
This bus route is pretty busy with departures several times per day (depending on the season). The bus schedules are adjusted to the arrivals & departures of the car ferry from Split, an ideal option for island hopping from there.
The bus departs from Stari Grad bus station (edge of the town) or from Stari Grad Ferry Terminal and drives via D116 road to Hvar bus station (stops in front of the supermarket and fresh fruit and veg market) which is about 6 min walk from the town center and ferry port. Here are the timetables:

Getting to Stari Grad Ferry Terminal
The distance from the Stari Grad bus station to the ferry terminal (where the car ferry from Split arrives) is 3 km which is about half an hour’s walk or 5 minutes bus ride. Where to get bus tickets?
You will buy your bus ticket (costs 4 to 7 Euro one way) from the bus driver, once you board the bus. Online ticket booking is not available. The route is serviced by the Cazmatrans, the local bus company that serves other bus routes on the island.
Note: Buses do tend to meet all ferries although for some late ferries you have to check for updates on your arrival. The alternative is to take one of the waiting taxis at the taxi station at the ferry terminal (taxi tel numbers are on the bellow map). Uber does not operate on the island.
Besides this route, Hvar is interconnected by buses between Hvar, Stari Grad, Jelsa, Sucuraj, Vrboska & some other villages (see below map)
Taxi between Stari Grad and Hvar Town
A taxi between Stari Grad and Hvar Town costs around 40 euros. You can get a taxi at the ferry terminal or at the bus station. Uber is not yet operating on the island.
