Biševo island is one of the remotest Croatian islands, located about 4.5 nautical miles from Komiža, the town and the port on the southern shores of Vis island.
The island is very small – it covers an area of just under 6 square kilometers, with a population of just 12 permanent inhabitants. Conveniently connected with a daily ferry boat line with Komiža (see info on croatiaferries.com website and bus schedules), the island is a very popular visitor destination.
The main attractions on the island are the ruins of the Benedictine monastery and the well-preserved church of Saint Sylvester (Sveti Silvestar – see the location on the map) from the 11th century.
The Island’s natural beauty spots are two sea caves – a well-known Blue Cave (Modra Spilja/Blue Grotto) and Medvidova Spilja situated on the very steep eastern shores, accessible by boat only.
The Blue Cave is 24 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 6 meters high while Medvidova Spilja is 160 m long and 14-meter wide sea cave. Both caves have very narrow entrances. Due to morning sun rays (in the summer months it is up to about midday) the light is penetrating deep into the caves reflecting from the sandy and rocky sea bottom creating amazing blue and silver colour reflections. In the winter months, the sun’s rays do not reach the cave entrance because of the angled position. This is one of the best snorkeling locations in Croatia.
